OPP are reminding the public of the numbers to call if you see a bear in an urban area.

Police say there have been several sightings as the animals prepare for winter hibernation.

Their presence in residential areas can be alarming, but police say not every bear sighting is an emergency situation.

If the bear is simply roaming around, in a tree and trying to get into a building where garbage or food is stored, you are advised to call the Ministry of

Natural Resources Bear Wise hotline at 1-866-514-2327 (TTY 705-945-7641).

If the bear is acting in an aggressive manner or an immediate threat to people, call 911 or local police.

To avoid a confrontation, OPP also advise never feed or approach bears.

Secure food, garbage and recycling and remove bird feeder when bears are active.

Never leave pet food outdoors, and clean and store barbeque grills and smokers.

Also, alert your neighbours to bear activity in your area.
